This is achieved by attaching the drum(s) to a special harness (also called a carrier or rack) worn by the drummer, although not all marching bands use such harnesses and instead use traditional baldrics to sling their drums (the British Armed Forces, for instance, still use the old style of slung drums). The drums are designed and tuned for maximum articulation and projection of sound, as marching activities are almost always outdoors or in large interior spaces. Articulation is paramount to producing a . These instruments are used by marching bands, drum and bugle corps, indoor percussion ensembles, and pipe bands. A marching percussion ensemble is frequently known as a drumline or battery. Snare drums. This gives the drum the big, full sound necessary for outdoor use. Standard sizes (listed as diameter x depth) are 1. They can weigh anywhere from 1. Smaller sizes such as 1. The modern . These high tension drums were first developed by Legato of Australia. High tension drums began and were perfected in the pipe band market and later moved into the marching band and drum corps areas. The bottom (or resonant) side of the drum has a tightly tuned head and synthetic gut or metal snare wires, which are often secured to the drum using a strainer to limit their movement and make the sound more staccato. For outdoor use, a projector or . First, the drum has an additional set of snares, directly under the batter (top) head. Second, the snares under the bottom head are made of coiled steel wires, similar to a drumset (as opposed to the synthetic . These differences tend to give the pipe drums a . Recently, corps- style drums have been produced with steel wire snares underneath the batter head (while remaining the gut snares under the bottom head). These snares are able to be switched on and off separate from the bottom snares, which allows units to use the second snares as a specific effect or as a permanent modification to the sound of the drum. The head of the snare drum can also be varied to give the drum a different sound. Depending on the music or style that the drumline plays, different brands and types of heads may be used. For maximum volume and stick articulation, a head made of woven Kevlar fibers is used and usually tuned to a very high tension. If the player desires a slightly . Finally, if more overtones and the softest head- feel are desired, the player may want to consider a heavy clear head with a center reinforcement dot (such as a Remo Powerstroke 7. This type of head is rarely used today among competitive drumlines, mostly owing to its lack of outdoor projection in comparison with Kevlar, but nonetheless it may still be used if a unique timbre is desired. One of the most famous marching bands utilizing this head is the Ohio State University Marching Band. Though they play difficult cadences and drum features, they still use the sling drum and Remo Powerstroke 7. Tenor drums. The bottoms of the shells are open and beveled to project the sound of the drum forward. Double- ply PET film heads are typically used for increased sound projection and durability. They are typically played with wooden- or aluminum- shafted mallets that have disc- shaped heads made of nylon. Mallets with felt or fleece heads, drum sticks, drum brushes, and other implements are occasionally used to achieve different timbres. The playing technique used for multi- tenors is somewhat different from that of a snare drum, and more like that of a timpani because the drumhead is struck closer to the edge instead of in the center. This creates a sound with more overtone, as opposed to striking the drumhead in the center, which produces a very short, dull sound with few overtones that is considered undesirable for multi- tenors. A full- size set of tenors consists of 1. Because a full- sized set of tenors with a carrier can exceed 5. Dynasty Quints, thought of as one of the heaviest sets, weighed in at 3. All multi- tenors based on the four- drum configuration are called quads despite the fact that there may be a total of five or six drums counting the shot drums. Sets with one gock drum are called quints, and sets with two gock drums are called sextets. To produce different sounds between gock drums with the same diameter, the head type, shell depth, and/or tuning between the two drums may vary. A common name for all multi- tenors is simply, 'Tenors'. Tenor drums have often been compared to the Latin percussion Timbales, as many musicians, including Tito Puente use a setup similar to modern marching tenors. Lines of as few as 1 or 2 tenor drummers are common in high schools and junior high schools. Many large college marching bands have 5 or more. Most drum corps consider 4 or 5 tenors to be optimal. The modern multi- tenors evolved from horizontally mounted dual single- headed bass drums first used by the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps in the late 1. Early multi- tenors had shells with a flat bottom. These drums sounded a lot like timpani, so they were called timp- toms. As drum sizes got smaller, more drums began to be added to multi- tenor configurations. The largest sets of multi- tenors had 7 drums and were carried by both the 1. Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps tenor lines. Scottish pipe bands use a single tenor drum as part of their drum corps. Traditional marching bands and drum corps may also use single tenors, which are double- headed drums much like snare drums but without snares, and only use either mallets (one or two, the former used in Spain and Italy and the latter in the UK and Commonwealth, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands) or sticks (the latter in marching bands in France). Such drums are used either with the sling mount or shoulder mount. Some show bands such as those at historically black colleges and universities use both single tenors and multi- tenors. Bass drums. The heads of these drums are usually made of a smooth white PET film, which gives a tonality that is midway between clear and coated heads. Unlike tenors and snares, bass drums are mounted so that the cylindrical shell of the drum is mounted on the player's harness and the two drum heads of the drum face out sideways. The player can then play on both heads, one arm for a drum head on either side. Each drummer plays and carries one drum, and a line is created by having several people carry different- sized drums. Such drums are called tonal bass drums. The lowest drum in a line, however, is often tuned to have a low . The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps were the first marching unit to use and standardize tonal bass drum tuning. Many groups try to use the largest size bass drum that is comfortable for the physically largest bass drummer to carry as the bottom bass drum, as larger people are generally better able to carry a bigger drum for long periods of time. In corps- style bands, each bass drummer only plays one segment of the entire bass drum part, unlike the snares and tenors. This is known as a split part. A unison refers to when all or some bass drummers play together at the same time. Lines can vary in size from as few as 3 players in small high schools to as many as 9 in very large college marching bands. A line of 5 (with individual drum sizes ranging from 1. Some traditional groups, such as some show- style marching bands from historically black colleges and universities continue to use a non- tonal bass line, where each drum is roughly the same size and each drummer plays the same part. Pipe bands and some traditional groups use a single bass drummer, who typically carries the pulse of the group. The bass drums used by pipe bands have seen an increase in size and more of a focus on tone in recent times. Typical sizes range from 1. The goal is to produce a subtle deep tone which is usually in tune with the drones of the bagpipe. Various muffling techniques (sometimes referred to as . The most common of these involve applying foam weatherstripping, either on the head directly or on the shell of the drum. Some drumhead manufacturers make heads that are . To achieve absolute uniformity, every member of the drumline must play with proper stick heights. A stick height is an approximate measurement of how high the bead of the stick comes off the drum head on any given note. Regularly used heights range from 3. Snares and tenors can use this chart to establish guidelines for stick heights, but techniques and specifications may vary between lines and can be changed depending on what the music calls for. Bass drums. They are grouped in a different section of the battery. Below are the guidelines for bass drum heights. Again, techniques and specifications vary between drumlines. Establish this height first and then work the others around it.) Start in “set” position with the mallets about 1 inch away from the head. Stick heights are not only important for visual reasons but they also strongly affect the sound quality. To get a uniform and consistent sound, one must play with even stick heights on the right and left hand. To practice playing with accurate stick heights, set up your drum or pad in front of a mirror. Start with a simple exercise and watch to see if your left heights are even with your right. If you have access to a video camera, you can record yourself and watch it later. It is easier to watch your heights and critique your performance when you are not focusing on playing. Cymbals. The hand goes through the hoop and twists, causing the hand to be flat against the bell of the cymbal, although variations are sometimes used for effect. Each player carries two cymbals of identical size and crashes them together, in addition to producing other sound effects by striking or rubbing the cymbals together. Cymbal players often perform visuals – movements such as twirls and flips that are eye- pleasing and boost the general effect of the group. A tonally haphazard, occasionally tiresome romantic extravaganza set against the horribly violent backdrop of civil wars in the former Yugoslavia, the film delivers the familiar Kusturica combination of Balkan exuberance, percussively infectious music, grand emotions, sudden bloodshed and knockabout comedy. And while the presence of top- billed Monica Bellucci will provide a much- needed boost in terms of international appeal, the days of Kusturica as an arthouse box- office name are but a faded memory. It's been 2. 1 years since Underground elevated Kusturica to the exclusive ranks of two- time Palme d'Or winners, but his status — especially among critics — has been in a generally parlous state during the current century. Bellucci's character, never named and identified in the credits only as as The Bride, also falls headlong for our humble hero soon after meeting him — the pair getting up close and personal when Kosta's ear is severed by a sniper's bullet, and The Bride sews up the resulting wound. But when the big day duly arrives, events take a scorchingly apocalyptic turn thanks to the arrival of murderous special forces dispatched by The Bride's ex, a British army general bent on revenge. It's at this point that On the Milky Road wanders increasingly into realms of magical realism, with Kosta's animal familiars, including his faithful pet hawk and a milk- loving snake popping up and helping out at crucial junctures. Fleeing certain death, the Bride and Kosta take on the contours of the figures from folklore: epic, tragic, consumed by the grandest of passions; framed against the spectacular backdrop of verdantly hills and valleys countryside via cinematographer Goran Volaric's bright widescreen images. He particularly revels in the village's boozily chaotic get- togethers, and latter set- pieces such as a pyrotechnic climax involving a flock of sheep, a newborn lamb, a minefield, mute mercenaries and a concatenation of digitally- enhanced explosions. Under such cacophonous circumstances Bellucci copes admirably well, not least in the matter of speaking the bulk of her dialog in charming, lightly- accented Serbian (her character has only lately learned the lingo). The legendary screen beauty and recent Bond woman somehow keeps her dignity intact throughout, whether she's dodging bullets under water at the bottom of a well or rolling around a muddy minefield in the digital coils of a palpably CGI serpent. The big question is whether even a sound as titanic as Van Halen's can sustain the loss of a loudmouth voluptuary like David Lee Roth, or will the whole metal ball simply collapse under the weight of generic gee- tar pyrotechnics? Though often derided as a frontrunner in the Most Obnoxious Man in Rock sweepstakes, Diamond Dave's giddy way with Uzipaced wisecracks and an unarguably media- genic presence gave Van Halen an overpowering edge on the legions of bands competing in the power- party rock arena. If rock & roll has become a circus maximus, then David Lee Roth was both a patter- spewing ringmaster and an untamable animal in the ring. But the documents are most remarkable—and baffling—for what they don’t contain: any hint of hardship or imminent catastrophe for the Viking settlers in Greenland, who’d been living at the very edge of the known world ever since a renegade Icelander named Erik the Red arrived in a fleet of 1. For those letters were the last anyone ever heard from the Norse Greenlanders. They vanished from history. This article is a selection from the March issue of Smithsonian magazine. When they did, they found the ruins of the Viking settlements but no trace of the inhabitants. The fate of Greenland’s Vikings—who never numbered more than 2,5. Those tough seafaring warriors came to one of the world’s most formidable environments and made it their home. And they didn’t just get by: They built manor houses and hundreds of farms; they imported stained glass; they raised sheep, goats and cattle; they traded furs, walrus- tusk ivory, live polar bears and other exotic arctic goods with Europe. They’re there for generations—for centuries.”So what happened to them?**********Thomas Mc. Govern used to think he knew. Newly discovered evidence is upending our understanding of how early settlers made a life on the island — and why they. An archaeologist at Hunter College of the City University of New York, Mc. Govern has spent more than 4. Norse settlements in Greenland. With his heavy white beard and thick build, he could pass for a Viking chieftain, albeit a bespectacled one. Over Skype, here’s how he summarized what had until recently been the consensus view, which he helped establish: “Dumb Norsemen go into the north outside the range of their economy, mess up the environment and then they all die when it gets cold.”. Thomas Mc. Govern (with Viking- era animal bones): The Greenlanders’ end was “grim.”. Reed Young)Accordingly, the Vikings were not just dumb, they also had dumb luck: They discovered Greenland during a time known as the Medieval Warm Period, which lasted from about 9. Sea ice decreased during those centuries, so sailing from Scandinavia to Greenland became less hazardous. Longer growing seasons made it feasible to graze cattle, sheep and goats in the meadows along sheltered fjords on Greenland’s southwest coast. In short, the Vikings simply transplanted their medieval European lifestyle to an uninhabited new land, theirs for the taking. But eventually, the conventional narrative continues, they had problems. Overgrazing led to soil erosion. A lack of wood—Greenland has very few trees, mostly scrubby birch and willow in the southernmost fjords—prevented them from building new ships or repairing old ones. But the greatest challenge—and the coup de gr. Geologists rank it as the most powerful eruption of the last 7,0. Climate scientists have found its ashy signature in ice cores drilled in Antarctica and in Greenland’s vast ice sheet, which covers some 8. Sulfur ejected from the volcano into the stratosphere reflected solar energy back into space, cooling Earth’s climate. A lot of people starving to death.”Amid that calamity, so the story goes, Greenland’s Vikings—numbering 5,0. They failed to learn from the Inuit, who arrived in northern Greenland a century or two after the Vikings landed in the south. They kept their livestock, and when their animals starved, so did they. The more flexible Inuit, with a culture focused on hunting marine mammals, thrived. That is what archaeologists believed until a few years ago. Mc. Govern’s own Ph. D dissertation made the same arguments. Jared Diamond, the UCLA geographer, showcased the idea in Collapse, his 2. He and the small community of scholars who study the Norse experience in Greenland no longer believe that the Vikings were ever so numerous, or heedlessly despoiled their new home, or failed to adapt when confronted with challenges that threatened them with annihilation.“It’s a very different story from my dissertation,” says Mc. Govern. You can do a lot of things right—you can be highly adaptive; you can be very flexible; you can be resilient—and you go extinct anyway.” And according to other archaeologists, the plot thickens even more: It may be that Greenland’s Vikings didn’t vanish, at least not all of them.**********Lush grass now covers most of what was once the most important Viking settlement in Greenland. Gardar, as the Norse called it, was the official residence of their bishop. A few foundation stones are all that remain of Gardar’s cathedral, the pride of Norse Greenland, with stained glass and a heavy bronze bell. Far more impressive now are the nearby ruins of an enormous barn. Vikings from Sweden to Greenland measured their status by the cattle they owned, and the Greenlanders spared no effort to protect their livestock. The barn’s Stonehenge- like partition and the thick turf and stone walls that sheltered prized animals during brutal winters have endured longer than Gardar’s most sacred architecture. No roads run between towns in Greenland—planes and boats are the only options for traversing a coastline corrugated by innumerable fjords and glacial tongues. On an uncommonly warm and bright August afternoon, I caught a boat from Igaliku with a Slovenian photographer named Ciril Jazbec and rode a few miles southwest on Aniaaq fjord, a region Erik the Red must have known well. Late in the afternoon, with the arctic summer sun still high in the sky, we got off at a rocky beach where an Inuit farmer named Magnus Hansen was waiting for us in his pickup truck. After we loaded the truck with our backpacks and essential supplies requested by the archaeologists—a case of beer, two bottles of Scotch, a carton of menthol cigarettes and some tins of snuff—Hansen drove us to our destination: a Viking homestead being excavated by Konrad Smiarowski, one of Mc. Govern’s doctoral students. The homestead lies at the end of a hilly dirt road a few miles inland on Hansen’s farm. It’s no accident that most modern Inuit farms in Greenland are found near Viking sites: On our trip down the fjord, we were told that every local farmer knows the Norse chose the best locations for their homesteads. The Vikings established two outposts in Greenland: one along the fjords of the southwest coast, known historically as the Eastern Settlement, where Gardar is located, and a smaller colony about 2. Western Settlement. Nearly every summer for the last several years, Smiarowski has returned to various sites in the Eastern Settlement to understand how the Vikings managed to live here for so many centuries, and what happened to them in the end. This season’s site, a thousand- year- old Norse homestead, was once part of a vital community. On a cold, damp morning, Cameron Turley, a Ph. D candidate at the City University of New York, stands in the ankle- deep water of a drainage ditch. He’ll spend most of the day here, a heavy hose draped over his shoulder, rinsing mud from artifacts collected in a wood- framed sieve held by Michalina Kardynal, an undergraduate from Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw. This morning they’ve found a delicate wooden comb, its teeth intact. They’re also finding seal bones. Lots of them.“Probably about 5. Smiarowski says as we stand by the drainage ditch in a light rain. He speaks from experience: Seal bones have been abundant at every site he has studied, and his findings have been pivotal in reassessing how the Norse adapted to life in Greenland. The ubiquity of seal bones is evidence that the Norse began hunting the animals “from the very beginning,” Smiarowski says. But a study of human skeletal remains from both the Eastern and Western settlements showed that the Vikings quickly adopted a new diet. Over time, the food we eat leaves a chemical stamp on our bones—marine- based diets mark us with different ratios of certain chemical elements than terrestrial foods do. Five years ago, researchers based in Scandinavia and Scotland analyzed the skeletons of 1. The results perfectly complement Smiarow. In the earliest days of the settlements, Smiarowski says, the study found that marine animals made up 3. Norse diet. The percentage steadily climbed, until, by the end of the settlement period, 8. Norse diet came from the sea. Beef eventually became a luxury, most likely because the volcano- induced climate change made it vastly more difficult to raise cattle in Greenland. Judging from the bones Smiarowski has uncovered, most of the seafood consisted of seals—few fish bones have been found. Yet it appears the Norse were careful: They limited their hunting of the local harbor seal, Phoca vitulina, a species that raises its young on beaches, making it easy prey. Instead, they pursued the more abundant—and more difficult to catch—harp seal, Phoca groenlandica, which migrates up the west coast of Greenland every spring on the way from Canada. Those hunts, he says, must have been well- organized communal affairs, with the meat distributed to the entire settlement—seal bones have been found at homestead sites even far inland.
